WW2 French citizens & Resistance members who embody the scripture, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."Hannah is haunted, closed off by a compounded tragic family loss, which has remained unspoken of, ignored. She's lost her boyfriend Jack, who's no longer willing to sacrifice his dreams & interests to Hannah's emotionally stunted detachment.Feeling at a loss, with her work becoming difficult, & Hannah's father taking himself off, registering with a care home after experiencing a TIA, Hannah feels her life has lost purpose. Finding a letter her father had forgotten to give to Hannah when his French mother passed, Hannah decides to search out her beloved grandmother's history in the small village of Saint Michel. Hannah, with little information, & her persistence, slowly learns the true history of Les Cerises, the B&B she's booked for her stay. The story of Jewish children (code named "Cherries") being passed along a network of French citizens, some of them Resistance members, along what became known as The Cherry Road. Gabriel, AKA The Angel, & Lucie, a husband & wife team, bring the children to Lucie's combined schoolroom-home, until they are passed over into Free France, eventually making their way to England & freedom. Her grandmother's last letter serves to lead Hannah to newfound friendships, facing the grief & self blame for the accidental death of her three year old brother, admitting to herself she misses Jack, loves him, & owes him the truth about her family's past.A heartbreaking, but uplifting story of having the courage to take a stand & help others against all odds. I was not sure about this and got a sample. By the time I had to choose to buy it there was no question that I wanted to know more. I have read several novels based in this time and enjoyed them. This is the second book I have read by this author and liked both. The character development is good and the secrets told throughoutthe story are great and the ending did not leave you hanging but brought each persons story to a complete ending. I like a finished story and not having to wait for a second or third book. This was a hard time in our history but I really I liked the book. No language or sex stuff.
